When to Buy a Plane Ticket to Save Money

You have plans to travel and you are going to fly then there are certain times you should purchase a plane ticket so you can save yourself some money. But the key to saving money on airfare is that you have to be somewhat flexible in your travel plans. The best days to plan your travels to save money is to purchase your airline ticket to fly out on a Tuesday, Wednesday, and sometimes a Thursday. If you are planning to travel to Miami for example for a weekend getaway the best days to fly to save money would be on Wednesdays and sometimes on Thursdays. But if you buy your plane ticket to fly out on a Friday then you will more likely pay more for that weekend getaway to Miami. Fridays are when most people can and do travel for the weekend or any day of the week for that matter so the airlines’ prices are higher on Fridays. Now you know the best days to fly out on to save money, now it is time for the return. The best day to fly back to save money on your return from your weekend getaway is to fly back on a Monday. Traveling on Sunday like Friday would be the most expensive day to travel because most people travel on Sunday because they have to return to work on Monday. But if you can travel on Monday morning you will save yourself some money. Now if you are traveling on a holiday weekend and the holiday falls on that Monday then that Monday will be more expensive. So traveling back on a Tuesday of a holiday weekend can save you like traveling on Monday of a non-holiday weekend.

Now you know your days of the week to travel to save money, how early should you buy that ticket. The earliest out that you know you are traveling is when you should purchase your plane ticket. By most accounts, three weeks out from your date of departure is the best time to get a cheaper ticket.

Since you know the days to buy a ticket to save money, the next step is finding the ticket. There are several search engines out there where you can find cheap tickets. I normally check several sites for my airline tickets before I purchase them. The first site is Kayak.com. Kayak searches for the cheapest airline tickets and fastest routes to your destination. The next site I use is Jetradar.com. Jetradar will normally find cheaper airline tickets than Kayak but normally the duration of the flights are much longer with layovers. So if you have time and trying to save the most money then Jetradar is the site to use. Also, Google Flights, Expedia, and Orbitz are popular sites to search for airplane tickets. Once you found the best airline fare that matches your dates of travel then purchase your ticket. Keep in mind, you can go directly to the airline’s website and see if the same fare you found on a travel’s website is for the same price and times. I would recommend you purchasing your ticket from the airline’s website if possible. The reason why if something comes up you can deal with the airline directly instead of going through a third party. At times, it is best to buy one-way over roundtrip tickets in order to save money and more flexible travel. The roundtrip price for your trip is based on what the travel site comes up with for your outgoing and return based on the times that the ticket is available. But you may find that the times don’t work or the price is too high. Then it best to buy separate one-way tickets to and from your destination. Some times you will find that the one-way tickets are cheaper than the roundtrip ticket that were quoted in the beginning. Always compare prices before you buy your airline ticket and be somewhat flexible it will ensure that you will save money on your next plane ticket.
