Exploring Dubrovnik (The Game of Thrones)

Spread the love

Dubrovnik isn’t a familiar place to most people.  Dubrovnik is a city in Croatia located along the Adriatic Sea. But if you are a fan of the series, The Game of Thrones then you know Dubrovnik.  Dubrovnik’s Old Town is Kings Landing.  Old Town is a step back in time to the 13th century when it was developed.  The cobblestone streets and the buildings’ architecture are so historic you feel you are visiting and experiencing a completely different era.  If you are planning a trip to Dubrovnik, check out these travel tips that would make your trip an enjoyable experience.

The best place to stay in Dubrovnik is anywhere close to Old Town.  There are no hotels in Old Town. There is a Hilton close to the entrance of Old Town which is the only hotel within walking distance. If you want to stay within walking distance of Old Town and a cheaper option than the Hilton, then you will need to get an Airbnb. There are many Airbnb options.  A word of caution, if you stay in any Airbnb close to Old Town you will have to walk up and down many steps to get to and from your accommodations.  Old Town is flat, but the city is on a cliff so once you leave the area you are walking up an incline.

Now that accommodations have been taken care of, let’s discuss things to do. The first thing you should do is sign up for a free walking tour of Old Town on Guru Walk (GuruWalk.com). This is the best way to learn the history of the place and get a lay of the land. Please tip your tour guide at the end since the tour is free. Besides the walking tour, take the cable car which offers 360-degree views of Old Town and the city. The beaches in Dubrovnik are a big tourist attraction. There are several beaches in Dubrovnik, and the most popular is Banje Beach. The beach is very rocky like most European beaches so pack some beach shoes for the rocks. The water is nice and cool but not cold so it’s very enjoyable. Another thing you can do is walk on top of Old Town. If you visit Dubrovnik during the summer months, then you will need to go early in the morning or late afternoon because during the day the heat and the sun beams down on Old Town.

Since Dubrovnik is located near the sea, seafood is a big part of the cuisine. There are a lot of good family-owned restaurants that offer great seafood in Old Town. Besides seafood, you will find a lot of Italian food and for dessert, gelato is very popular.

For after-hours, there are several bars and restaurants in Old Town offering an assortment of beers and mixed drinks. And there are many spots around Dubrovnik that you can take in gorgeous sunsets. Since the city is on a cliff it is easy to find areas that offer spectacular views to see some of the most beautiful sunsets.  Just leave out of Old Town and travel upwards. Dubrovnik is a special place, and I am sure you will love it.

I recommend spending 3 to 4 days in Dubrovnik. And within that time look into day trips to neighboring countries, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
