Exploring Singapore: The Cleanest City in the World
If you heard anything about Singapore, I’m sure you heard how clean and orderly the city is. Well, all that is very true. Singapore is exceptionally clean and probably the cleanest city I ever visited. From the streets to the metro there is no trash and it is clean. And the metro is very convenient, and you can take it from the airport and around the city to get to key locations. The city has many rules, they don’t even sell chewing gum. The goal is to keep the city clean at all costs.
Singapore is one of the most expensive cities in the world. The city is very modern with skyscrapers and amongst these modern structures are temples and ethnic communities. Besides the huge Chinese community, there is a large Indian community.
One of the most relatively new and famous modern structures in the city is the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. The Marina Bay Sands is a luxurious hotel known for its famous infinity pool on the top of the hotel. Only guests of the hotel have access to the infinity pool. The hotel has a mall that includes upscale stores, restaurants, gym, and an observation deck. Another tourist attraction near the Marina Bay Sands is the Gardens by the Bay. It is a showcase of an artistic garden of all kinds of plants.
If you are into authentic Chinese food, you will have a lot of options in Singapore. Food is a big part of the culture. And the food there is cheap. There are food stalls called hawker centers throughout the city. The hawker centers are filled with vendors selling all kinds of Chinese delicacies. One of the most popular dishes in Singapore is Hainanese Chicken Rice. Hainanese Chicken Rice is a dish of boiled chicken with seasoned rice. The dish originated in southern China. One of the most popular restaurants in Singapore selling Hainanese Chicken Rice is Tian Tian Hainanese Rice restaurant. The restaurant is so famous that the late great food critic Anthony Bourdain loved their chicken and rice so much that he even featured the restaurant. All this publicity has added to very long lines at lunch filled with locals and tourists waiting to get a taste of their chicken and rice. After trying Hainanese Chicken Rice at another restaurant before going to Tian Tian Hainanese Rice restaurant, I would say the chicken and rice at Tian Tian was distinctively better than the chicken and rice I tried at the other restaurant.
Besides the Hainanese Chicken Rice, the Chinese coffee in Singapore is very good. The coffee is brewed and then they add condensed milk and sugar. The coffee is served cold or hot. If you are a coffee lover, it is a must-have if you ever visit Singapore.
Singapore is a very nice, clean, and orderly city with a huge food scene. I recommend spending two to three days there. That would give you enough time to explore the city and see all the important sights. Make sure you sign up for a free walking tour with GuruWalk.com on the first day so you will have a good sense of the lay of the land and the history of the city. And make sure you immerse yourself in all the different food options.
